Yesterday, President Obama announced that he is beginning a new effort to fix as much of the broken immigration system as he can without Congress. The president said that he will take executive action on immigration by the end of this summer. Like the president, we are frustrated with a Congress that refuses to act on immigration reform. We are encouraged by the president’s decision because this relief package has the potential to help millions of immigrants, including the estimated 267,000 undocumented LGBT immigrants who have waited too long for the safety and security they deserve.
As the president takes leadership to fix the current immigration system, Immigration Equality, alongside our supporters, will continue to make sure that Obama’s executive order is written with LGBT immigrants in mind. We will work tirelessly to ensure that the president remains consistent on his policy regarding LGBT people, and we will work closely with his advisors to ensure the package they are creating recognizes the distinct barriers facing LGBT immigrants and ensures that our community has equal access to relief.

Together, we can stop LGBT deportations and secure more opportunities for our families.
